Airports Hold Annual Global Meeting in Malaysia
– Defining business strategies to drive the industry upswing –

This year’s theme Above the Turbulence - Sustaining Business Excellence goes straight to the heart of issues that can help jumpstart industry growth following a year of difficult economic conditions in all markets worldwide. Airport traffic has mirrored the stagnation of world economies and CEOs from around the world will be looking at winning strategies and immediate priorities to strengthen their business models.

Jointly organized by ACI World and ACI Asia-Pacific, and hosted by Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad, the annual conference will gather aviation experts from all five ACI geographical regions to lead a series of panels and discussions on airport economics, investments, ownership, growth potential, manpower planning and key issues of environmental responsibility and public health preparedness. The event runs from November 2 – 4, 2009 at Kuala Lumpur Convention Center.

Partnership and global cooperation will be core themes during the conference. The three keynote speakers represent respectively national civil aviation oversight, travel & tourism and air navigation service providers: Dato’ Azharuddin Abdul Rahman, Director General of Department of Civil Aviation Malaysia; Mr. Greg Duffell, President & CEO of Pacific Air Travel Association (PATA); Mr. Alexander ter Kuile, Secretary General of Civil Air Navigation Services Organization (CANSO).

ACI Chair for the past two years, Mr. James Cherry (President and CEO of Aéroports de Montreal),Tan Sri Bashir, Managing Director of Malaysia Airports and Mr. Moore-Wilton, President of ACI Asia-Pacific (Chairman Sydney Airport) are holding a press briefing on Monday afternoon at 17:30 in the KLCC (Room 309).

Tan Sri Bashir Ahmad, who will welcome the delegates at the opening session on Tuesday, said, “Being able to host this event presents us with the opportunity to showcase and promote Malaysia. It gives Malaysia Airports the chance to spearhead the meeting of minds of key personnel in the aviation sector which reflects the acknowledgement of our contribution to the aviation industry. I am confident that all the delegates will gain valuable knowledge and experience from all the informative sessions on the global aviation issues presented by the experienced speakers.”

The challenges of a sustainable future for the industry – capacity, efficiency and service quality – figure prominently on the programme. Participants will review the current industry situation and the opportunities for promoting greater business stability despite the economic downturn that has plagued world markets for the past year. A special session will focus on the outlook for the Asia Pacific region, which is currently leading the first indications of an industry rebound.

Mr. Moore-Wilton commented at the briefing: “Our industry has gone through some very challenging times, yet I am confident that we will ride out of the storm. We have witnessed many crises over the past decade but our industry has a long standing culture of perseverance and the ability to rebound quickly from crisis. I believe this is an excellent moment for us to discuss how we can stay above the turbulence and sustain the business excellence and I believe our delegates will treasure this opportunity to exchange views and network with industry colleagues.”

Mr. Cherry added a global dimension to the briefing, “We are here to affirm the positive attitude of airports worldwide, and their determination to tackle the challenges we face in a positive manner. We are an integral part of the communities we serve and a vital piece of infrastructure for local economies. We ensure a network of global connections that underpin travel and tourism, business development and access to markets worldwide. This long term commitment comprises the core of our future vision and our determination to serve these communities in a sustainable manner. And this week, it will be our primary objective to take a realistic look at defining strategies, charting a path that focuses our energies on productive initiatives.”
